CV for EMINE ALI RUSHTON – CLICK TO DOWNLOAD
I graduated in 2002 with a first class BA degree in English Literature, from Durham University. Almost immediately I began a work experience placement at Vogue. When I moved from Vogue fashion to the beauty department during my third week and, well, I can still remember the smell of the beauty cupboard (deep and inky Fracas, the sugared-almond scent of MAC lippy…) – the entire experience seemed prophetic: I was hooked.
I am a freelance writer and editor with 7.5 years experience in beauty, health, style and trend journalism.
I have contributed to titles that span the publishing spectrum – everything from ELLE, Weekend Magazine, Metro and The London Lite – where I penned a health and beauty column for several years, to a whole host of women’s weeklies and glossies.
I am also a blogger – and founded Miss Malcontent Seeks Truth in Beauty all the way back in 2007 with one aim – to be utterly honest about the very best, and worst, beauty products on the market. Recently I’ve also started another blog: we make up as we go along which is about the ins and outs of the beauty editor’s day-to-day, from press trips and launches to peeks into colleagues’ make-up bags.
My niche, however, is for cutting-edge beauty copy that comes with a distinctive voice and (whenever it’s not edited out) a bit of attitude too. I have been channeling my off-the-wall beauty visions into indie titles and e-zines for years– and have written for i-D, Juli B and Urban Junkies, where I am Health & Beauty Editor. I have also been regularly contributing to NYLON (and recently NYLON GUYS) for five years – cherry-picking top London launches to grace the beauty news pages of the New York-based titles. My work is most often trend- and personality-driven – sparked by the girl on the street, the conversation on the latest networking site, gossip overheard backstage at fashion week… and I’ve been lucky enough to receive a Wella Nomination for Best Trend Journalism.
My interest in the ‘alternative’ over the ‘mainstream’ has been channelled into the research for, among other things, my latest role as Beauty Editor at GLASS online and contributing editor to GLASS – an innovative multi-platform title which is distributed by COMAG. The online issues launched in December, with the first print title following in February 2010 with an amazing celebration at Liberty. Aiming to strike the perfect balance between intelligent debate, innovative design and sustainable ethics and ethos, it really does feel like my dream project – not least of all because GLASS Beauty is as much about the home-grown cult brands as it is the trend-setting powerhouses. Swot up here: www.theglassmagazine.com. Issue 2 hits shelves on 1st June 2010.
